Peter began to say to him, “Look, we have left everything and followed you.” Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age—houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields with persecutions—and in the age to come eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.”
Reflect and Pray:
What am I reluctant to give over to Christ and the spread of the gospel and building of the kingdom? As a youth, I remember singing, “All to Jesus I surrender, all to him I freely give.” In my heart and mind, I was probably thinking, “Some to Jesus, I surrender, some to him I just won’t give.”
As my friend, Bob Waitman, once told me, “Preacher, I think you have too many earthly possessions!” I know I do. And, I honestly believe that if most all of them disappeared today my life wouldn’t come to an end.
On the other hand, there are some things that are very hard to give up. These include my pre-conceived beliefs and ideas, my pride, my “need” to be right, and even many of my expectations. These are the real things I struggle with on a regular basis. What would be harder for you to give up, your material possessions, beliefs, and ideas, pride, or something else?
